This is going to be a big learning curve for me, excited but dreading it as well as life is too busy and stressful as it is, and my other hobbies are deep rabbit holes of complexity that don't give any crossover benefit with this endeavor. Anyway this would be a bonus and I'll be able to better asses if it's an option after I get BI set up. Additionally, if savetimestampedfile is configured as True then an image file is created of the processed image, where the file name includes the time of detection.

Yep, another software you need PC for that would be fun to have. The sighthoundlatest.jpg image shows the bounding box around detected people/vehicles and can be displayed on the Home Assistant front end using a localfile camera, and used in notifications. IF the PC can handle our 5 cameras without too much trouble I may also ditch our Smartthings hub and run with Homeseer for home automation as well. I'm like, holy crap what did I just do! But if it functions well and I can get some years out of it I'll be happy enough.

to keep some symmetry on the desk top, it's the Lenovo mini 5 with a i7-10700T chip, 16MB DDR4 ram, 512GB M.2 and I'm slapping in a 2TB Crucial MX500 2.5" SATA SSD to use as the local hard drive.

My old imac needed replacing as well so I've order the new Mac Mini with the M1 chip, and monitor that will run both Mac and PC (switched) and will allow keyboard and mouse sharing as well. Well I've purchased a PC to basically dedicate to Blue Iris so here we go! I won't argue that my PC purchase is financially the best option but it appears it will work. I've always looked over the fence at Blue Iris and shed a little tear knowing it wasn't available for us folks on Mac (without lots of effort and knowledge well above my skill set). Never really operated 100% correct and the with the latest Mac update, Big Sur, things are a complete disaster!

I highly recommend this platform as it takes a lot of the work out of similar options (even the free ones and the more expensive ones). As a Mac household for the past 10 years the options are extremely limited so Sighthound is what we've rocked for the past 5 years as our security camera software. Now I have most of the features necessary for our multi camera environment with an excellent platform that is seeing active development again. Initially I thought this might be a rag-tag group of former developers until they really started to push the platform development at an unexpectedly rapid pace. After contacting Vitamin D for news about development, I found that Sighthound Video was picking up the project where Vitamin D left off. I got everything working using some older codecs and using reduced resolution. Sadly Vitamin D Video was not continuing development. The new cameras came with new Codecs and some new requirements. Mid-tier cameras in 2013 ($350) are dramatically better than some expensive ones in 2008 ($1500). The HD video revolution has pushed resolutions higher quickly and at low cost. This system worked well for years until moving to a larger facility this year with some new cameras. I scaled our hardware with a high end processor and respectable raid array for the job.

In dealing with Vitamin D Video, I felt that we were one of their fringe customers using a higher number of cameras than typical. Vitamin D Video fit the bill and we used this system with various cameras from Panasonic, Axis, & Sharx.
#Sighthound camera install#
I wanted a software package that I could install on flexible computer hardware without any specialized camera needs acting as a central recording hub. Several years ago, I looked for an ip camera system that would help reduce noise (false positives), install simply and work with a wide variety of cameras and encoding formats.
